What Heirloom is

The things that carry
a life in them.

Some things cannot be digitised. A scarf still holding the faintest trace of perfume. A photo printed in 1972 with the handwriting of someone no longer here on the back. A charm worn every day for twenty years.

Heirloom is for those things. You send them to us. We keep them safe. And when the time comes, we put them in the hands of the person you chose, with a note in your words and a call to your executor before anything leaves our hands.

Everything you need to know

Item limit
Up to 5 items. All items must fit within a single 30×30×30 cm box and weigh no more than 5 kg combined. Additional items may be accommodated for an additional fee quoted at intake.
How to send items
Once your plan is set up, we'll provide a secure shipping address in Sydney. We recommend insured tracked postage. We'll photograph and catalogue your items upon receipt and send you a written confirmation.
Storage conditions
Items are stored in a secure, climate-controlled facility in Sydney, NSW. We maintain a digital catalogue of all items including photos taken at intake.
Insurance
Heirloom storage does not include insurance by default. Items with combined monetary value over $500 must be covered by insurance you arrange separately. We strongly recommend against storing items of significant monetary value. If you'd like guidance on insurance options, please contact us.
Setup fee
$999 one-time. This covers onboarding, item intake and cataloguing, your first year of storage, and your first year's check-in.
Annual safeguarding
$99/year from Year 2. Covers secure physical storage, annual item condition check, and catalogue update. Year 1 is included in your setup fee.
Annual check-in
$39/year (annual) or $59/year (bi-annual). A real Afterword team member calls you each year to review your plan, confirm recipients, and ensure everything is current. Year 1 included.
Activation & dispatch
Your nominated executor contacts us following your passing and uploads a certified death certificate to our secure portal. An Afterword team member calls your executor to verify before any items leave our hands. Items are then dispatched via tracked courier to your nominated recipient(s).
Cancellation
You may cancel at any time. Your items will be returned to a nominated address within 30 days of cancellation at your cost. Annual safeguarding and check-in fees are refunded pro-rata for any unused portion. A 5-business-day cooling-off period applies from purchase — full refund available within this window.
Plan transfer
Heirloom plans may be transferred to another individual for a 25% administration fee. Contact us to arrange.
Minimum age
18 years. Afterword plans cannot be created on behalf of a minor.

Questions

Common questions about Heirloom

We take every reasonable precaution to store items safely. In the event of damage or loss due to our negligence, our liability is limited to the reasonable estimated replacement value of the item(s) affected. We strongly recommend that items of significant monetary value are covered by insurance you arrange separately — we can provide guidance on options. Our storage does not include insurance by default.
Yes. If you'd like to add items beyond your initial 5-item allocation, or if additional items require a second box, we can accommodate this for an additional annual storage fee quoted at the time. Contact us at [email protected].
Yes. You can request the return of your items at any time by contacting us. Items will be returned to a nominated address via tracked courier within 14 business days at your cost. Please note that if you cancel your plan, items must be claimed within 30 days.
We have a service continuity agreement with a nominated trustee firm. In the unlikely event Afterword ceased to operate, that firm would step in to honour all outstanding plans, including managing and dispatching stored physical items. Your plan is protected regardless of what happens to us.
Once your plan is set up, we'll send you a secure intake address in Sydney, along with guidance on how to pack and ship your items safely. We recommend insured, tracked postage. Upon receipt, we'll catalogue and photograph each item and send you a written confirmation with a digital inventory.
